Park Hyo Shin Reclaims ‘Phantom’ Glory in Triumphant Return

South Korean vocal powerhouse Park Hyo Shin made a seismic return to the stage on June 1, headlining the musical Phantom at Seoul’s Sejong Center for the Performing Arts. After a nine-year hiatus from the role, Park’s commanding vocals and nuanced acting captivated the audience, delivering a deeply moving performance that reaffirmed his mastery as the titular character in the production’s “Grand Finale” celebrating its 10th anniversary in Korea.

Stepping back into the role of the Phantom—a genius artist shrouded in a mask, hiding his disfigured face while dwelling in the shadows of an opera house—Park crafted a singular, unforgettable portrayal. His richer emotional depth and soaring vocal prowess sent shivers through the theater, proving his enduring connection to the character he first embodied in 2016.

Based on Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel The Phantom of the Opera, the musical Phantom weaves a distinctive tapestry of musical theater, opera, and ballet. Since its Korean premiere in 2015, it has been a cultural juggernaut, topping ticket sales charts in 2015 and 2016, clinching the Grand Prize at the 11th Golden Ticket Awards, and earning acclaim across four seasons for its artistry and box-office dominance.

Park Hyo Shin’s Phantom will run at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts through August 11, offering audiences a chance to witness his transcendent return to one of Korea’s most beloved productions.
